APPROVAL BY IMF OF 142 MILLION LOAN IS A DECISION
MOLDOVA HAS BEEN WAITING FOR A LONG PERIOD,
BRAGHIS SAYS

Chisinau-16.12.2000/14:13:34/(BASA-economic) The approval by the
International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday of the 142-million-dollar
loan is a very important decision for Moldova which has been waiting
for it a long time, Premier Dumitru Braghis told Saturday a press
conference.

According to him, the decision is important first of all to resume
the foreign financing, redress Moldova's image before foreign
investors. "For us it is not so important the amount of the IMF
loan but the new impetum in the relations with donor countries and
international financial organizations," Braghis said.

"We hope to regain the support of the World Bank Board of Directors
that will examine the Early Strategy on Poverty Alleviation on
December 19," the prim-minister was quoted as saying.

Braghis said the cabinet has already a favourable preliminary
answer to the document presented to the World Bank.

The Moldovan government hopes the foreign assistance will be
unlocked until the end of the year in the amount of 40 million
dollars. Among the most difficult tasks Moldova must settle there
are the economic growth, poverty alleviation and foreign debts,
Braghis stressed.

Asked whether the ratification of the agreement with the EBRD to
convert in shares some debts was indeed crucial for the IMF
decision, Braghis stated that after the rejection of the document
by the parliament the cabinet has taken a series of actions to
settle the conflict.

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund on Friday
approved in principle a three-year loan under the Poverty Reduction
and Growth Facility (PRGF) in an amount equivalent to SDR 110.88
million (142 million dollars) to support the Moldovan government's
economic program.

Potrivit acestuia, hotararea are importanta, in primul rand, pentru deblocarea finantarii
externe, refacerea imaginii R.Moldova in fata investitorilor straini.
donatoare, organismele financiare internationale", a declarat Braghis.

ministru.

Dumitru Braghis a declarat ca Guvernul are deja un raspuns preliminar favorabil documentului
inaintat Bancii Mondiale.

Printre

Consiliul Directorilor executivi ai Fondului Monetar International a aprobat ieri, in principiu,
creditul in suma echivalenta cu 110,88 milioane DST (142 mln USD) pentru reducerea saraciei si cresterea economica in Republica Moldova.
