During
the meeting Johan Mathisen mentioned that the activity of the International
Monetary Fund in Moldova is focused on three domains: fiscal, monetary and
structural. The parties touched upon the issue of increase in tariffs for
utilities. Mr. Mathisen mentioned that the IMF's
position is that the utility tariffs should cover the costs and should allow
for a continuous functioning of the enterprises.
In this regard, Johan
Mathisen recommended to the Chisinau administration to increase the
tariffs gradually, increasing at the same time the subsidies for socially
vulnerable groups of population. Also, the IMF representative suggested an
elaboration of a targeted nominal compensations system.
In the same context, the
General Mayor Dorin Chirtoacă stated that he will inform the municipal
structures about the discussion had with the IMF Resident Representative in
Moldova, so that the said issue to be eventually discussed at one of the
sittings of Chisinau Municipal Council.
